Tom Jones

I translate how commodity businesses make money into scalable commercial strategy — with AI and technology as the enabler, not the end.

Tom Jones

About

Curious, open, and grounded. I bring 15+ years of success leading commercial strategy, market development, and program delivery across energy and environmental markets. My career is marked by consistent results in creating and scaling new markets, commercial products, and operating models — across start-ups through Fortune 500 firms including bp, FIS, FIUTUR, and Wipro.

I specialize in understanding how commodity businesses make money across the value chain and translating that understanding into scalable commercial execution. In my current principal role I lead energy practice expansion at the intersection of AI and SAP-enabled trading solutions — building go-to-market strategy grounded in addressable market economics, not technology for its own sake.

I have operated globally across the US, AsPac, and Europe, leading internationally distributed teams supporting 24×7 commercial and operational environments. I align commercial, operational, regulatory, and technical stakeholders around shared economic objectives — and I build durable teams capable of executing complex, market-making initiatives under real-time financial demands.

Interests

Energy Transition Economics

The intersection where environmental policy meets physical commodity markets is where the most interesting pricing problems live. I follow how incentive structures — IRA tax credits, CBAM, voluntary carbon protocols — create real financial instruments out of operational performance, and where that logic breaks down in practice.

Commercial Ops & Enterprise Technology

Most ETRM and SAP implementations fail commercially, not technically. I'm interested in why — the gap between what a platform was designed to handle and how a trading desk actually operates. The best systems I've seen were shaped by operators who understood both sides.

Emerging Environmental Markets

Carbon, hydrogen, CCS, biofuels, and differentiated fuels are still early-stage markets finding their pricing logic and settlement infrastructure. I follow how GHG accounting standards (PCAF, GREET, OPGEE), regulatory frameworks, and physical commodity fundamentals converge to create — or undermine — market liquidity.

People, Places & Perspective

I travel for the friction of being somewhere unfamiliar — it recalibrates how I think. I stay active because clear thinking depends on it. I follow social and political issues closely, especially where policy intersects with human dignity and economics. I have a genuine soft spot for animals. And underneath all of it: a real interest in being a decent person — showing up consistently for people, not just professionally.
